As an ordinary resident of Portland, I’ve watched the recent large-scale arrests of undocumented immigrants by ICE unfold in our city, and my heart is filled with mixed emotions.

On one hand, upholding the nation’s immigration laws to safeguard national security and social order is understandable. The influx of undocumented immigrants can indeed pose challenges to the city’s resource allocation and public safety. From this perspective, ICE’s law enforcement efforts have a degree of necessity.

On the other hand, the methods and scale of these operations are deeply troubling. Reports of rough tactics by agents, even cases of mistakenly detaining legal residents, and the lack of transparency in some enforcement processes have eroded public trust. Moreover, many of those arrested have lived here for years, integrated into our communities, and contributed to the city’s growth. Simply arresting and deporting them feels overly harsh.

Portland has long been an inclusive, diverse city. These large-scale, heavy-handed raids have shattered community harmony and tranquility, betraying the very spirit of our city. I hope the government will exercise more humanity in law enforcement—striking a balance between upholding the law and showing compassion, so our city can return to the peace it once knew.
