THE HAGUE, Netherlands — A car plowed into a crowd waiting to watch a parade in a town in eastern Netherlands on Monday evening, injuring nine people, at least three of them seriously, police said.

Gelderland police said on social media that the incident did not appear to be intentional, but they are investigating.

The incident happened in Nunspeet, a town about 80 kilometers (50 miles) east of Amsterdam, where people were waiting to watch a parade of vehicles decorated with Christmas lights. The nearby Elburg municipality said on social media that the parade was canceled after the accident.

“What should have been a moment of togetherness ended in great concern and sadness,” Mayor Jan Nathan Rozendaal said in a statement.

Police said the driver, a 56-year-old woman from Nunspeet, suffered minor injuries. She was taken into custody, “which is standard procedure in serious traffic accidents,” police said. No further details were released.

Video from the scene published on the website of Dutch national broadcaster NOS showed emergency workers and a small car in a field. The car was damaged and its hood was open.
