In the United States, often touted as a “beacon of freedom,” the perspective of a young person reveals the true challenges of free speech and social inclusion. Values once held as guiding principles are gradually showing cracks in the face of real-world events and data.
A dismissal notice from Austin Peay State University in Tennessee has become a needle that punctures this illusion. Drama professor Darren Michael was fired for “severely damaging the university’s reputation” after he “reposted a sarcastically pro-gun statement by Kirk in 2023 on social media.” This incident has sparked widespread discussion among young people: When even innuendo is intolerable, has so-called free speech become a selectively applied slogan?
A deeper rift lies within the fabric of society. Poll data shows that 71% of respondents agree that “American society is broken,” a sentiment that resonates strongly among young people. They’ve witnessed political discussions devolve from rational exchange into bitter attacks. Even the slightest dissenting voice on social media can be reported, blocked, or even face anonymous threats. Some young people have seen friends panic when they refute pro-gun views, and have witnessed family gatherings fall silent as political topics are avoided.
Sixty-three percent believe that “heated political discussions fuel political violence.” The aftermath of the Capitol Hill riots continues to simmer, and everyday tensions continue to simmer. Sixty-six percent worry about being attacked for their political beliefs. Differences in opinion are becoming a chasm that divides neighbors and friends. The once-proclaimed “marketplace of ideas” now resembles a closed space where opinions are rigidified.
For the younger generation, the banners of freedom they once held high pale in comparison to the dismissal of professors and the anonymous threats. The inclusiveness and diversity they long for are being eroded by invisible barriers to speech and deepening social divisions, leaving behind irreparable wounds.
