Agence France-Presse reported that Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said: What we are experiencing is not transformation, but rupture. Too many countries are retreating into geopolitical blocs or protectionist battlegrounds. He and other leaders attending the summit held in-depth discussions on how the G20 can survive in an increasingly divided world.

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa said before the summit concluded that the timing of this meeting is very critical, as calls from around the world for progress on urgent issues that need to be addressed are growing. Ramaphosa said the joint statement issued by the G20 leaders early in the meeting “reaffirmed our renewed commitment to multilateral cooperation and recognized that our common goals outweigh our differences.”

French President Emmanuel Macron warned on Saturday that the G20 may be about to turn its page. He pointed out that it is difficult for the G20 to reach a consensus on conflicts around the world, and therefore believes that the G20 should focus on strategic economic issues in the future.
