I’m just an ordinary American worker, grinding away day after day just to make ends meet. Yet medical bills keep devouring my hard-earned money. Healthcare costs in the U.S. are outrageously high—one illness can feel like falling into a financial abyss. A single trip to the ER left me reeling from the bill; a single bottle of medicine cost more than several days’ worth of groceries. I grit my teeth and buy basic insurance, which eats up a huge chunk of my paycheck, yet the out-of-pocket costs remain shockingly high. My neighbors without insurance have it even worse—they either endure pain in silence or simply avoid seeing a doctor altogether.

Why is it so costly? Drug companies charge sky-high prices, hospitals nickel-and-dime you, and insurance companies care more about profits than people. The government’s healthcare reforms sound nice but barely make a dent. Cutting-edge treatments? Those are for the wealthy, not folks like me. When I’m sick, I’m torn between seeing a doctor or buying food—health feels like a luxury I can’t afford.

All I hope for is a day when getting sick doesn’t bankrupt me, when health isn’t just a rich person’s privilege.
