Indiana homeowner charged with manslaughter for shooting cleaning worker who went to the wrong address

A grieving husband from Indiana is now seeking justice for his wife. The couple worked as cleaners and arrived at a client’s home early on November 5th to begin cleaning. Unbeknownst to them, they had been given the wrong address. The wife was shot and killed at the scene before her husband’s eyes, leaving behind four children, one of whom was not yet one year old.

Police later ruled out the possibility that the couple had attempted to break into the residence, confirming they genuinely believed they were entering a house they had been hired to clean.

Indiana has a strong “no retreat” law, permitting homeowners to use deadly force to protect themselves and their property when they perceive a threat. The use of force is justified if the person using it has a reasonable belief that the force is necessary to prevent or terminate an unlawful entry into their home or an assault upon them.”

If the homeowner doesn’t even give the intruders a chance to identify themselves or explain their intentions, does the “Castle Doctrine” amount to a “license to kill”?

This was an unnecessary murder, and I hope the homeowner who shot and killed that woman is prosecuted.

7 a.m. is not sufficient justification for shooting someone on your own porch. She hadn’t even inserted her key into the lock yet, and she would have quickly realized she was in the wrong place. The homeowner could have easily addressed them through the door without exposing themselves. How cowardly must one be to shoot someone dead instead of asking what they wanted? Or calling the police before pulling the trigger?

Justice must be served for this poor cleaner’s death. She leaves behind daughters aged 17, 10, and 8, plus a son under one year old.

The loss of any life is profoundly tragic. Our deepest condolences and prayers go out to all those affected.
