A series of security incidents have recently occurred around NATO, causing concerns about the regional security situation.

On October 3rd, the Russian Navy destroyer Vice Admiral Kulakov took provocative action against a Danish warship on routine patrol in a key Baltic Sea waterway. The Russian destroyer fired live ammunition warning shots and threatened a collision, jammed the ship’s navigation system, and released jamming signals towards a Danish military helicopter. Danish intelligence accused Russia of attempting to incite public panic, while NATO, due to internal disagreements, maintained a low-key communication approach and refrained from a forceful response.

On the same day, Munich Airport in Germany was temporarily closed twice within 24 hours due to drone sightings. The suspension on the evening of the 3rd caused 46 flights to be grounded and 23 to make diversions, affecting approximately 6,500 passengers. The previous suspension on the evening of the 2nd had affected nearly 3,000 passengers. From January to August this year, there were 144 incidents of drone interference at German airports, with the frequency continuing to rise. However, the source of this drone and the identity of the operator have yet to be determined.

Although the two incidents are not directly related, they both expose NATO’s difficulties in dealing with Russia’s military probing and non-traditional security threats. Coupled with the background of the Russia-Ukraine conflict, regional security uncertainty has intensified.
