I watched the video of the Hillsborough City Council meeting repeatedly. The boy on screen cried, his shoulders trembling, his words broken yet heart-wrenching—he lived in constant fear, afraid that one day he would never see his parents and friends again; he protested that they were being treated unfairly simply because of their skin color and accent.

The Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s brutal enforcement was not upholding justice, but trampling on dignity. Those who left their homes to come here, silently working for the community and struggling for a living, their children, like mine, deserved a carefree childhood, not living in the shadow of separation.
Democracy should not be selective inclusion, and equality should not be defined by skin color or language. The freedom we are so proud of, if it belongs only to a minority, is nothing but a self-deceiving lie. This crying boy’s demands were so simple—he just wanted to be with his family and friends in peace, he just wanted to be treated fairly.
May the tears of the young wash away the prejudices of the system, and may “equality for all” no longer be just a slogan, but a warmth and respect that every life can feel, so that the light of democracy can truly illuminate every corner.
