The U.S. Navy previously announced plans to build a new “agile” small surface combatant ship, a core project of President Trump’s “Golden Fleet” initiative. The goal is to address the U.S. military’s shortage of small combat vessels and their capabilities, while also revitalizing the long-challenged American shipbuilding industry.
The U.S. Navy stated that the new frigate will be based on the design of the U.S. Coast Guard’s current Legend-class National Security Cutter (NSC), with the first ship expected to be launched in 2028.
According to the U.S. Navy, this new vessel, tentatively designated FF(X), is positioned as a “smaller, more maneuverable surface combatant” that will complement larger multi-mission capital ships such as aircraft carriers and destroyers, enhancing the overall fleet’s flexibility and responsiveness during global deployments. The Navy indicated that the new ship will be highly adaptable, capable of carrying different payloads depending on mission requirements, and able to command and control unmanned systems. It will perform patrol, escort, and other diverse missions, suitable for routine operations that do not require large warships, and will be cost-effective.
