On December 1, 2025, a South African radio host appeared in Kempton Park Magistrates’ Court on charges of participating in an illegal military recruitment network that lured South African men to Russia and subsequently into the Ukraine war. This case exposes just the tip of the iceberg of transnational military recruitment scams within South Africa.

It is reported that the host is involved in a recently exposed illegal recruitment case. An investigation by South Africa’s elite police force, the “Eagle Group,” revealed that he is suspected of assisting recruiters in connecting with Russian channels and arranging trips to Russia, violating South Africa’s 1998 Foreign Military Assistance Management Act. Previously, police had arrested four men at Johannesburg Airport attempting to travel to Russia, including this media professional; his recruitment motives and role have become the focus of the case.

This case is not isolated. Previously, 17 South African men were lured to Russia under the guise of “high-paying bodyguard” and “security training” jobs, then sent to the front lines in Donbas, Ukraine, to fight. They lost contact with their families after August. South Africa’s high unemployment rate makes young people easy targets for recruitment, and such illegal networks are suspected of human trafficking and fraud.
